About South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre
SAMREC is situated at the entrance to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve and offers a unique and interesting insight into the world of the marine life of Algoa Bay and the challenges it faces. We rescue all marine animals but concentrate primarily on marine birds, especially the endangered African Penguin and whenever possible return them to the wild. It is feared that we have less than 5 years to save the African Penguin from extinction, therefore we are there to create awareness for the need for coastal conservation and to educate the public on how to care for our environment and to save it for future generations.
Our motto is: Be a part of Nature-Never apart.
Our Discovery centre is a “Please touch “ room as we feel that by using as many senses as possible one will never forget an experience. Through the use of specimens , toys and posters we offer a hands-on experience. We offer guided hikes and rock pool exploration as well as a short sensory trail through the fynbos .Penguin presentations are given throughout the day and the public are invited to “join them for lunch” at 2.30 each afternoon. Each visitor is offered a guided tour through the hospital facility and is invited to learn how a penguin is washed or treated.
Come and visit us! Take a fun hike along the beach, explore the rock pools and take in the beauty of the area. When you have finished your adventure, come and enjoy a steaming mug of filter coffee, something cold, or a snack in our Flying Penguin Café, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
To arrange hikes or rockpool experiences please book ahead.

Map and Directions to South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre
Port Elizabeth, South Africa, is situated in Algoa Bay which is a large eastward-facing half heart bay. The city was established in the western sector of the Bay because of the protection offered by Cape Recife from the dominant south westerly swell. Samrec is situated in the nature reserve and is a few metres further on from Pine Lodge. Go down Marine Drive and take the Cape Recife turn-off, carry straight on to the boom gate, which will be opened for you.
